Solid State Trip Units for 600 Volt Air Circuit Breakers

In the early 1970’s the ‘trip unit’, also known as the ‘brain’ of air circuit breakers evolved into what is known today as solid state trip units. Solid state trip units have far less moving parts than their predecessor, electro-mechanical trip units. Companies such as Electric Control Equipment are able to take older circuit breakers and retrofit solid state trip units onto them to give customers the benefit of keeping their existing switchboards, while simultaneously upgrading to new technology. Each major manufacturer of switchgear makes a solid state trip unit. Generally speaking it is acceptable to retrofit different manufactures trip units on different company’s breaker. For example, a GE solid state kit could be retrofitted on a Westinghouse circuit breaker.

All solid state trip units accomplish the same basic three essentials:

  • All are highly accurate
  • Low maintenance
  • Long life
