WESTINGHOUSE AIR CIRCUIT BREAKERS

Westinghouse Air Circuit Breakers were among the first originally manufactured air circuit breakers on the market, with production on the first "resettable fuse" (former name for circuit breakers) taking place around 1927. These early circuit breakers were large, mounted on heavy slate and featured dashpot/"sucker disk" trip units. Westinghouse 600-volt circuit breakers were both electrically or manually operated and available in both draw-out (DO) or bolt-in formats. At this time, Westinghouse breakers were called the DK-25, DA-50, DA-75, and DA-100, and frame sizes ranged from 600A up to 6000A.

In approximately 1955, Westinghouse changed its entire circuit breaker line and began producing DB air circuit breakers, in similar frames sizes. These models were the DB-25 at 600A, DB-50 at 1600A, DB-75 at 3000A and the DB-100 at 4000 amps. Westinghouse followed up the DB breakers by improving on the design and introducing 3-position circuit breakers that featured a "test" position where the breaker could be racked off of the back stabs, and still be in the cell. This allowed users to test the breaker's close & trip functions without engaging a load.

CUTLER-HAMMER CIRCUIT BREAKERS

Around 1975, Westinghouse introduced the DS circuit breaker line and DS switchgear, which became the basic platform for all of their future circuit breakers. They are still produced today and are known as the Cutler Hammer DSII circuit breakers. Earlier DS breaker models included the DS-206 with an 800A frame size, the DS-416 at 1600A, DS-420 at 2000A, DS-632 at 3200A and the DS-840 with a 4000A frame. Fused models are the DSL-206, DSL-416, DSL-632, and DSL-840.

In 1994, Eaton acquired the Westinghouse Distribution and Control Business Unit (DCBU) and integrated it with their Cutler-Hammer business. DS circuit breakers are still made today, featuring many improvements including a new trip device with the ability to communicate. Models with an 800A frame size include the DSII-308, DSII-508 and DSII-608. 1600A models are the DSII-516 and DSII-616; at 3200A is the DSII-632 and 4000A for the DSII-840. Cutler Hammer also offers the Magnum line of breakers.
